About Me

Hello, and thanks for stopping by texturemate. My name is Bill Scott and this is my online repository where I share any textures, stock photos, brushes, or other design resources I create with others online! Professionally, I am an electrical engineer, with occasional website or graphic design work here or there. My hobbies include photography, graphic design, web design, and 3d modeling.

Bill's picture

35 fabric and paper textures have been added today. I didn't realize how popular those categories of textures are, so I will keep adding more. I also enabled 5 star voting on all texture images, brushes, and texture packs to help track what is good and what isn't!

I uploaded 10 grunge textures I created in Photoshop from combining different source photographs, adjusting colors, and adding effects here and there. They all ended up redish for this group. They are located in either the Digital or Grunge folders.

Turn a Texture into a Brush Easily in Gimp!

An effective way to use texture images and stock photos is to turn them into brushes for use in your graphic editor. Both Adobe Photoshop and Gimp allow you to easily create brushes and maintain libraries of them. Brushes are a very effective tool for any graphic artist because you can easily change the size, opacity, and placement of them in your image. You can also change their rotation and shape very quickly. Different brushes can be used for common tools such as the paintbrush, airbrush, and eraser.

Bill's picture

130 texture stock photos of various categories such as brick, cobblestone, grass, wall, and wood have been added today. Due to feedback, the first free texture pack has been split into two packs of 15 textures each instead of one containing 30 textures.

Textures in Web Design - Less is More

The use of texture in web design is something that can be the difference between a site that really stands out or a bland looking one that will not garner as much attention. Grunge styles or wood grain are popular textures that if used effectively here and there, can look great. Textures can add dimension and depth to a site's appearance and have seemingly made a comeback in the last few years, although many great web designers claim to always have used them.

Make Seamless Grass Texture from a Photo with Spiral Graphic's Genetica

Genetica by Spiral Graphics is a standalone texture editor with rendering and mapping capabilities that is quite powerful after a little bit of a learning curve. It utilizes node methods to allow you to apply effects, transforms, filters, and much more to your source image or texture. The software also comes with many textures and ways to generate procedural textures, but for my first guide with Genetica, let's use it to make a seamless texture from a photograph of some grass. Not too hard, but often hard to make look good.
